Enhancing the value of derelict property in social landlord housing and premises

Enhancing the value of derelict property in social landlord housing and premises

Context

Paris Habitat, a social landlord for the city of Paris, disposes of over 1,000 tonnes of abandoned goods in its premises and housing units every year. The landlord would like to find operational solutions to recycle these items.

Issues

  • Qualifying and quantifying the different types of neglected goods in housing
  • Have a clear vision of the issues and opportunities related to these abandoned assets and their circular upgrading
  • Identify operational solutions for collecting, sorting and reusing abandoned goods

Methodology

We worked with Paris Habitat in 3 phases:

  • A diagnostic report to define the property's value enhancement potential and the associated challenges and opportunities
  • Identification of the most appropriate circular solutions for the collection, sorting and recycling of these goods.
  • Launch and follow-up of 2 pilot projects using circular solutions prioritized during the sourcing phase

Impact

- 2 sorting and recycling service providers selected, with 2 pilot projects implemented
- Results of the first pilot project (3 months): switch from unsorted landfill collection to 10-stream sorting, 53 tonnes of waste sorted, with 33 tonnes recycled, including +28 tonnes of furniture.
- Results of second pilot project (1 month): 20.5 tonnes of waste sorted, with +13 tonnes recycled
